North Shore of the Asia-Pacific Gateway keeps expanding

VANCOUVER — The Honourable Stockwell Day, President of the Treasury Board and Minister for the Asia-Pacific Gateway, today marked the start of construction on the Lynn Creek Rail Bridge and Brooksbank Avenue Underpass project in North Vancouver, B.C. This federal investment of over $21 million will improve access to ports and railways, and help to seize job creation opportunities with a skilled workforce as we strengthen our trading connections overseas.

OTTAWA:  Bill C-248, a Private Member’s Bill which imposes mandatory minimum sentences for trafficking of persons under the age of eighteen, passed through the House of Commons this week.  The bill, drafted and introduced by Conservative M.P. Joy Smith, was seconded by North Vancouver M.P. Andrew Saxton, who enthusiastically advocated for the bill inside and outside the House of Commons.

VICTORIA - Capilano University is getting a new film centre, thanks in part to a grant from the federal government’s Knowledge Infrastructure Program, announced Prime Minister Stephen Harper today.

The new 70,000 square-foot centre, to be located on the school's new north campus in North Vancouver, would allow Capilano University to consolidate its film and animation programs, serving up to 400 students annually. The project will cost about $30 million, with about $14.29 million coming from the Knowledge Infrastructure Program, with the balance coming from the Province of British Columbia.

Newest SeaBus officially christened

In a ceremony with links to maritime traditions and the earliest days of SeaBus, the MV Burrard Pacific Breeze was officially christened today at Victoria Shipyards in Esquimalt, BC.

Maureen Hayes, the longest-serving female employee of SeaBus, performed the honours.  She was joined by North Vancouver MP Andrew Saxton, the Parliamentary Secretary to the President of the Treasury Board and Sheri Plewes, TransLink vice-president, Capital Management and Engineering.  Also on hand were North Vancouver City Mayor Darrell Mussatto, Stan Sierpina, Vice-President, Customer Service, Coast Mountain Bus Co., and Malcolm Barker, Vice-President and General Manager of Victoria Shipyards.
