North Shore MPs John Weston and Andrew Saxton are part of Stephen Harper's entourage that touched down in Beijing Wednesday as the prime minister makes his first official trip China.

The delegation, including the West Vancouver—Sunshine Coast—Sea-to-Sky Country and North Vancouver MPs, is visiting Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Seoul as part of the government's plan to strengthen political and economic ties.

"Increasing our exports to Asia is vital to Canada's future prosperity," Saxton stated in a release.

Both MPs have lived and worked in Asia, Saxton for eight years and Weston for 10. Saxton has served on B.C. government's Asia Pacific Trade Council and is vice-chair of the Canada- China Legislative Association.

Last month, Weston held a forum in West Vancouver — Canada's Relationship with China and Hong Kong — discussing the countries ties. Representatives from China and Hong Kong's economic and trade office attended the event.

"The town hall provided insights that will be valuable on this trip," Weston stated in a release. "This trip is a continuation of work I've been doing on behalf of my riding, a return to a part of the world I admire greatly, and an exciting opportunity to strengthen Canada's relations on the eve of the Olympic and Paralympic Games."
